Have you rented a US Forest Service cabin or lookout?
I’m considering renting a cabin somewhere out west, possibly Montana or Idaho, in May and was wondering what to expect when renting a Forest Service cabin. The price seems very good. I’m hoping to rent a small boat for fishing. The more remote the better as long as I can drive to it reasonably close.
Expect four walls and a cot. Most are barely furnished with the minimum and in hard durable furniture. Bring your own everything just as if you were tent camping except you won’t need the tent. They will tell you that there fully equipped but that’s in their interpretation. Some may have running water if they do bring your own shower head and plunger. Most just have a privy, bring your own TP. There may or may not be mattress beds could be army style cots. Bring sleeping bags, air mattress and bug spray for the bed bugs. And did I say bring your own everything yes I did don’t forget that. The most beautiful views I ever had was staying in a lookout highly recommend that over a cabin, less bug and bear problems. Enjoy your trip and be sure to bring your own everything.
