Every year the company sponsors a fishing derby for the whole family. There are games for the children with prizes. They fix hamburgers and hot dogs. The company always serves ice cream sometime during the day. All the free soft drinks you can guzzle are also available. We usually pack a picnic basket, load up the camper, and join our neighbor in his boat. He has been looking forward to this trip because he got one of those fancy fish finders for Christmas and this will be his first time trying it out. I am excited too because I think I am going to catch the biggest fish.
We are equally excited because, if he is able to find the fish, I will be able to catch the biggest fish, but that is our secret. Fishing in Arizona is work. When we grew up in Minnesota, there were lakes around every corner. In Arizona, you have to drive quite far to find a fishing lake. They are usually crowded, but on this day, they are extra crowded. Looking for a place to catch that prized fish was going to be a daunting task. However, remember, the neighbor had that special fish finder gadget, a Global Positioning System, (GPS) device connected to the boat. It measures depth, it can find schools of bait, and it can tell the difference between a fish and an old clump of bushes.
We get to the site early in the morning. We pop the camper up and start setting things outside so that we look like real campers. The grill is even set up for the fish we hope to bring back to the campsite. We get the boat backed into the lake and set off to find that pocket of fish. The neighbor starts in on his fish finder technology. He tells us about the science of sonar and all of that other technical stuff. He also talks about how accurate the thing is, all I want is for him to tell me he has found the spot. I am going to win the derby this year. He has talked about that dang, fish finder for months. I know I am the best angler in the company and if he can find them, I can reel them in.
We take our time boating around the lake. There were so many people out having fun; the real anglers had to get away from the swimmers, skiers, and floaters. That is fine, this year with the trusty fish finder; we can go out pretty far. We have an extra tank of gas, plenty of snacks, and our bait box is full of everything you can imagine. We are ready for the finder to do its thing. My imagination has already floated to the end of the day. I have imagined the weigh-in, and the cameras snapping, as I get to the front of the line. Even though, we have not found a spot yet, I have declared myself the winner of this year’s derby and made this my best fishing day ever.
I am watching the screen on the fish finder. I am not sure what I am looking at because this is my first time even seeing one. The neighbor said; “This is it”! I am ready. I cast my line and the biggest fish I have ever seen is coming towards me as I reel it in. This is my first day with a fish finder, my first cast, and my first catch. Crowning me, this year’s winner is really going to come true.
